"Solemn Bride/In Prayer"
"Asho! Khao!"
Highlighting the intersection of Desi culture and queer identity. The
typical Desi bridal aesthetic consists of a very detailed
sari or lehenga, lots of gold jewelry,
mehndi or henna that goes down the arms, and heavy
makeup. However, this person is in a moment of reflection-- pondering
their gender and sexuality, wondering if they truly fit into the
expectations of their culture. In the water, their lehenga is
getting soaked, their kajol smeared by tears, they pray to
Allah, contemplating where they belong-- in their culture and
upbringing, or in their sexuality. It's a question that I, as well as
mant other queer people of color, have experienced. Oftentimes, queer
people of color are considered outcasts in both respective spaces-- to
queer for cultured spaces, too cultured for queer spaces. It's a very
lonely position to be in, and that state of isolation leaves us
wondering where we truly belong.
